The astronomical clock of Besançon contains numerous mechanisms that are absolutely fascinating to study !
The Besançon astronomical clock has four levels to it.
The first level consists of the base, with eight pilasters featuring 12 angel sculptures on their faces, with carved ornamental panels in between the pilasters.
The second level features the central unit, structured by eight columns, four of which are seen on the front of the clock, dividing it into three sections composing the “Calendar”.

The third level includes the first series of automated figures, with 15 of them. At its centre sits the main clock dial, which gives the time in the city of Besançon. This level has five niches on the front of it. The central three niches each have one automated figure : Faith, Hope, and Charity. Situated on either side of them, the other two niches hold the 12 Apostles.
Finally, the fourth level consists of a unit featuring six automated figures. The bottom portion features the archangels Gabriel and Michael flanking a temple showing a scene depicting the Resurrection, with the resurrected Christ appearing in the upper niche as the Roman soldiers who had been standing guard at his tomb disappear. This final tier is topped by a statue of the Virgin Mary standing on a globe with an Anchor of Salvation on it.
